Is TMJ Pain Taking the Joy Out of Your Favorite Foods?

Do you hear a loud clicking or popping sound every time you chew? Do you wake up with a sore jaw, ear pain, or facial tenderness from grinding your teeth (bruxism) all night?

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) is more than just a nuisance; it is a complex condition that can cause locking of the jaw, dizziness, and chronic migraines. It turns simple pleasures—like eating a burger or laughing with friends—into sources of anxiety and pain.

Arvada TMJ Dysfunction Success Stories

Why does my jaw hurt?

A nightguard protects your teeth, but it doesn't stop the muscle tension that causes the grinding in the first place. TMJ dysfunction is often driven by cervical spine stiffness and stress that keeps your jaw muscles in a constant state of spasm. To solve the pain, you must treat the neck and jaw as one unit.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Clenching or grinding your teeth, especially during sleep or high stress, overworks the jaw muscles. This leads to waking up with a sore jaw, facial tenderness, and tension headaches.

Disc Displacement

Inside the jaw joint, there is a small disc that helps the bone glide smoothly. If this disc slips out of place, it causes the characteristic "clicking" or "popping" sound and can cause the jaw to lock.

Cervical Spine Dysfunction

The neck and jaw are intimately connected. Poor neck posture or upper cervical spine stiffness can refer pain directly into the jaw and face, mimicking TMJ dysfunction.

Muscle Spasms

Trigger points in the masseter and temporalis muscles (the chewing muscles) can cause referred pain into the teeth and ears. This is often mistaken for a toothache or ear infection.
